What he wrote was that if you can't breastfeed, there was this formula you could make (and he claimed it went way back in history). The formula given (in the 70s) consisted of barley water, milk, and corn syrup. He knew that honey was toxic to babies and did not advise it for babies.

Suri is past the age where honey is potentially toxic. IMO (and this is IMO and not Scientology), she needs to come off the bottle to a tippy cup or, better, a glass.

In the 70s, the Scientologist-parents I knew fell into two groups: the ones who were in the Sea Org (a 24/7-million-year-contract as a CofS staff member) and the parents who had a regular life with jobs and homes (hence a life where their involvement with the CofS was as a paying student or preclear, as well as contact with the non-church-world). Those who were Sea Org members had very little time with their children who were kept together and monitored by so-called "nannies," other SO-members whose job was basically baby-sitting. Family time was minimal for most SO members, although higher-ups got more of the "normal life" time with their kids. When you were a SO member, the SO owned your time pretty much 24/7 and you were committed to "clearing the planet" pretty much full time. These folks had very little personal time and were basically giving their children over to the nannies to raise. So who could possibly breast-feed in that environment? Enter the barley formula! At that time, it was made with barley and reconstituted dried milk. Much cheaper.

Now those who were not SO members were responsible for supporting themselves and their families and hence had paying jobs. Those who made a decent living were likely to breakstfeed (and the Scientologist doctors - pediatricians and OB/GYNs -absolutely encouraged nursing). Non-SO families ran the gamut from low-income to wealthy.

CofS staff members varied... some were at poverty-level and some had other sources of money to live on, so the kids were cared-for accordingly. Some of the CofS orgs are SO-run, such as the Celebrity Center of L.A. that Tom Cruise is part of. The CCs seem to be much more aware of PR and image (no surprise) and so their staff were always welll-groomed. You didn't want to see the behind-the-scenes staffers who had no other resources than the bare-minimum the Church provided. The ones who had children were stretched even thinner.

Suri and other children of wealthy Scientologists are in a totally different category. Katie could have breastfed (and I hope she did at least the first few months). Barley formula was meant for those who couldn't breastfeed, mainly because they had to work as either SO or staff-members or who had to work out in the real world. Unless she had a medical reason for not nursing Suri the first six months, there is really no Scientological reason for having her on barley formula.

Since I left the CofS, I got married, birthed two babies. With my first baby, when I went back to work, I pumped milk for a while without much success and the baby couldn't keep down commercial baby formula... we ended up using barley formula (using raw unhomogenized milk and corn syrup)and it was the only thing she chould keep down. That was recommended by our pediatrician, who was one of the two recommended to the Scientology community at the time. She had been my gyno back when I was a Scientologist and I stayed with her after I left the Church.

So I hope this gives you some information from someone who has BTDT but isn't a member of the cult anymore.

Any parent who refuses to place limits on their child's behavior is a bad parent. Period. I say this as the mother of a bright, imaginative, and very willful four year old daughter who would run things in a heartbeat if I let her.

But I don't, because it's a parent's job to prepare their child to be a successful, functional adult, and that means understanding that the world doesn't revolve around them. The Reminis are not doing their job, and I feel just fine sitting in judgment of them. After all, they chose to go public with what shitty parents they are.

As for LRH's baby obesity formula, any parent stupid enough to feed that garbage to their baby instead of the food their mother's body makes specifically for them (or infant formula designed to mimic that food) deserves public ridicule, at the very least.
