But Jada and Will Smith being Scientologists is hardly news, is it? I can remember Jada's affiliations go back at least to the late 90's. I though Will was in "by default".

Scientology's certainly producing quite a few (icky) movies and movie star buddies lately. It's almost like celebs join up as an investment--a guarantee of high paying work (making shlock, but shlock that pays well).

Not that it's only the famous or infamous who feel this way, but members of the entertainment industry, especially the successful ones, are more prone to embrace a "religion" or whatever else that elevates the individual to the status of god. If you're dying to believe what you hear about yourself, or if you believe it too much already, you're the perfect candidate. It doesn't hurt that actors have tons of money to go with their vanity-induced gullibility either. Great business idea, that Scientology.

If you're the sort of person, black or white, who can accept Scientology at face value, then you're so nominally engaged in reality that issues such as "racism" aren't going to hold much interest for you.

What's so crushingly dispiriting about Scientology isn't just its wackiness. It's that its wackiness, as far as wackiness goes, is so uninspiring.

Had L. Ron Hubbard been some sort of lyric visionary, an ecstatic caught up in extraordinary witness of beauty, then I could kinda, sorta, see the attraction to Scientology.

But Scientology is significant in that it lacks any sort of beauty, or the esthetic charge humans have for thousands of years associated with religion. Hubbard's dull mechanical voice, his plodding middle-brow diction, are in keeping with the lifelessness of the crazy thoughts he expresses.
