It's a pretty well known open Hollywood secret that Lucas found out from his attorneys that if he changed over %25 of each film, that by law, changed the film enough that it wasn't considered the original... And by doing so Lucas would no longer have to pay his, cheating and adulterous, ex-wife Marcia any more money that she was entitled to per their divorce settlement that got her a check any time the original versions of the classic trilogy were sold, aired, etc. So...the movies changed so he wouldn't have to make his cheating ex-wife any richer than she already was from the royalties for the films she got in the divorce settlement. Sorry, that the real reason for the rest of the world not having the versions we like is much more personal and less conspiratorial than the author of that article would like to believe, but there it is."
