Katherine Heigl Admits That If It Were Up To Her, She Would Probably Have Aborted Seth Rogen's Love Child

heigl.jpgIf you're one of those Knocked Up audience members whose bullshit-sensing adrenal glands went haywire watching Judd Apatow's blockbuster paean to chubby, jobless, weed-huffing types and the attractive, upwardly mobile women who drop everything to carry their accidentally conceived children to term, then you are not alone, as even the actress called upon to bring such an improbable scenario to life has expressed her own misgivings about taking the role in the current issue of Vanity Fair:

"It was hard for me to love [Apatow's] movie" because it's "a little sexist..."
"[I]t paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as goofy, fun-loving guys."

Knowing now what was then going through the mind of the white-hot actress (one of Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating!) explains much about her subsequent career choices, choosing for her Knocked follow-up woman-written and woman-directed romantic comedy 27 Dresses, the empowering story of some chick who's miserable because the prince from Enchanted proposes to her sister instead of her.

  • I'm pre-programmed to loathe women who are beautiful, blonde, and more successful than me, but I kinda like her - not these comments so much as her earlier admission that her Grey's Anatomy storyline makes no sense at all, her exasperated "why doesn't he just shut the fuck up?" when Isiah Washington mouthed off about the TR Knight thing, and her bleep-necessitating moment at the Emmys. If she would only learn how to correctly spell processed meat products, I'd have a girl-crush on her.

  • Forget the crush. Accidentally interacted with her at a supermarket last year. Pretty - but kinda bitchy. Although on second thought, that might make her more attractive to you.

  • Knocked Up may not exactly be realism city, but it's certainly no less credible than 27 Dresses, wherein Katherine Heigl is upset because she's not pretty enough to get a date. Strictly in terms of the message being sent to young impressionable women, I would definitely say Dresses is far more pernicious.

  • Kathy, the pot called. Left a message about the shrew being humorless and uptight. Running away with someone more fun, goofy and what's this, oh, and not such a thankless, egomanical bitch.

  • "a little sexist"? - stick to blowing the Director and 'empowering' yourself by doing such drivel as 27 Dresses, Katherine... cloth-eared bint...

  • @MR-Busy: My other girl-crush is Sarah Silverman, so, yeah.

My hetero crushes aren't really any better, though. Even Russell Crowe's Naomi-esque phone-throwing antics haven't been sufficient to cure me of my long-lived Bud White fantasies.

  • Sarah is one hebew hottie that has Jimmy - but I bet she could be turned. Perhaps I will be fortunate to meet her in the "kosher foods" section of the supermarket next time. I will as always, report back.

  • I kind of agree with the hot bitchy blonde.

  • You know what's ironclad? Fame. Now let me just burn this bridge...

  • It's sexist because? Oh, yeah, it shows guys being guys and women complaining about it. We all know that never happens. I'd never heard of her until "Knocked Up" and it's too bad she can't appreciate that the straight male half of the population actually knows who she is now.

  • Is it so wrong that she's pointing out the crappy side of trying to be female movie star in Hollywood? Since most big-budget movies feature incredibly sexist portrayals of women, your choice is to either suck it up and take a role in a movie that you're not 100% in love with or stay on the B-list. So, yea, not much of a choice if you're an ambitious actress in Hollywood. I don't think her saying that "Knocked Up" is not exactly the most flattering portrayal of women in relationships makes her a bitch. It makes her honest.

"It was hard for me to love [Apatow's] movie" because it's "a little sexist..."

But it was easy to love the paycheck and the attention, huh Katie? Fame whore. Gah! I hate this chick.

  • Thanks, Katherine, for landing a big loogie on all the stupid sentimental hackery around this insipid, sexist flick (earth to Apatow: girlfriend would never have made it with the idiot in this life or any other, let alone bear his spawn).

Love it when heteroschlubs fantasize about attractive women going gaga for their loser selves, then whine when, hello, reality steps in and they, believe it or not, AIN'T INTERESTED. You don't see these same guys giving a moment's glance at women less than pseudo-anorexic robobabes. Tired and boring, but since these same guys run studios and have cash, we'll be subjected to "Knocked Up" knockoffs into eternity. Snore.

  • I will have Seth Rogen's baby before I see 27 Dresses. I almost had to kill myself during the premiere of In Her Shoes. But you're so surprised by that, right?

  • @Desk_hack:

No wonder, Lars prefers a Real-Doll.

  • I think what she might be getting at is that, if the movie was about a fat ugly stoner chick with a heart of gold who marries a god played by, say, Christian Bale, everyone would be all 'THAT SHIT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN'. Yet we totally buy Apatow's reverse version. And I'm totally ambivilent about Heigl. I just get where she's coming from.

  • If she's so disgusted with herself for acting in this movie, she should feel free to send me the millions she made in the process. I get what she's saying, but couldn't it also be argued that most of the male characters in this movie are lazy, unmotivated, stoned losers?

  • @mipsy6: So I guess the A-list is more important self-respect or avoiding hypocrisy?

    Works for me!

  • Image of picardia picardia at 07:27 AM on 12/04/07 *

    @mimster: Bingo.

  • @nick_r: Ain't that the truth.

  • I am wondering if those of you calling her a hypocrite know what it's like to be an actor. You take work because it's work, and you do have your own thoughts about scripts, but as an actor you don't usually get to influence in any way to change things. It's not hypocritical. It's the job. If you waited around for scripts that fit your world view perfectly, you'd never work. It is absolutely valid for Katherine to have those opinions about a film she was in (and she's completely right about Knocked Up.

I think it's just incredibly unusual that you hear actors (especially women) speaking their true mind about projects they've been in. This woman seems to be be opinionated and outspoken, and I admire that about her. It's probably going to get her into some trouble, but who cares? Good for her.

  • @hildy: The bottom line is that she took the nice paycheck first, and spoke out about her "true feelings" on the subject matter later. The first move fattened her wallet; the second move burnished her PR image with feminists.

So, you're right, it's not hypocritical. It's just cynical.

  • @thrillwill: Geeze, have all of you people always had jobs which 100% reflected your true opinion about everything? You've never had to lead a project that you thought was doomed or sell a product that you wouldn't consume yourself?

I'm not so jaded as to think that life requires whoring yourself, but there seems to be a big gap between hypocrisy and Heigl's mild criticism of the schlub-fest.

And also for the record, I'm neutral on the Heigl overall, although I thought her defense of the guy with the labrador around his neck was cute.

  • Image of Desk_hack Desk_hack at 12:56 PM on 12/04/07 *

@hildy: Sure, but without the movie, she'd be wallowing in supporting-cast TV land, just happy that she can buy a single-level house in Sherman Oaks, and certainly would NOT be profiled in Vanity Fair.

Don't bite the hand that feeds, babe.

  • I'd think Hi-jel entitled to her bloviating opinion if I thought she could act. When she publicly admits that Grey's Anatomy was sub-mediocre crap and gives a heartstopping performance in something, I will officially trumpet any condemnation of this town's continuing minimization of humanizing female roles on screen. Until then, hers is much ado about biting a feeding hand.

Oh, and all you people throwing your Interwebs support behind Kitkat should also know that actors and actresses who prove their talent also employ their own dialogue writers. Holly Hunter is one of quite a few female actors who often notoriously rewrites her entire character during any given production. If only Heigl were part of some sort of wide-appeal project seen by tons of men and women, have longevity on DVD, and elevate her above the status of a bit player on a shitty primetime soap...

  • @lrubemp: Amen. A. Men. "Knocked Up" was a deeply disturbing film and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so.

  • Image of raincoaster raincoaster at 02:34 AM on 12/05/07 *

@Desk_hack: No. Be honest: you know in your soul it's not her movie work that got her the cover of VF, but rather her tv work and her PR. Knocked Up was the Napoleon Dynamite of a particular season, nothing more.

  • @raincoaster: "KU' was no '40 yr V' and '40 yr V' was no 'Superbad'.

I loved 'Superbad' and I am also in the ambivalent column on Ms. Heigl. I do thank god she is not Ellen Pompeo, whose possession of a career in entertainment that pays for more than store brand hot dogs is one of the most puzzling things to me in the universe right now...

  • She's probably just sick of being hit on by the real-world versions of Seth Rogen who now think they stand a chance with her.

  • The movie was a flippin' COMEDY! It was supposed to be as outrageous as it could possibly be. That's what made it so successful. It was about the most unbelieveable scenario possible. I have no doubts that there are many men that live day-to-day just like Seth Rogen's character. Just like I have no doubts there are just as many women out there like Katherine's. Would they "hook up" & end up any different than the characters in the movie? Doubt it! If Hollywood put out movies that were as predictable as our day-to-day lives, they wouldn't be doing much business.

  • If you read the script and took the money, shut your fat mouth.

It's sexist? Against whom? The men are funny, pot-smoking schlubs. Is that exactly a good thing to be?

Her new film is far more offensive to women than KU. I'm sure she'll suffer a bout of verbal diarrhea again while promoting her next idiotic chick flick.

The actresses who have the luxury of being heinous bitches without a cause generally waited until they became nearly indispensable and for the most part, they are talented and liked. You are no Reese, Angelina, Drew, Cameron, Renee, Sandra, Jodie or Nicole. You are a shitty actresses on a shitty show. Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson are incredibly underrated actresses who would be wise to leave that sinking ship.
