Last night, nestled in an episode of the consistently hilarious 30 Rock starring Carrie Fisher as the ghost of Liz Lemon's schizophrenic, rat-infested future, was a scene of less than two minutes in duration that could easily go down as one the greatest acting triumphs of this or any other generation. In it, Sir Alec Baldwin (is he not a Sir yet? Because he should be) inhabits no less than five figures from Tracy Jordan's formative years, seamlessly traversing age, gender, and ethnic lines with a proficiency that would make a bitterly envious Eddie Murphy storm out of the room faster than he did on Oscar night. Jack Donaghy, we salute you.

Now I can't decide between "The Glengarry Glen Ross" speech or this one...I like his acting.
I'd let him call me a thoughtless little pig anytime.
Good lord he is funny in this show. "Never go to a second location with a hippy."
This scene had me in awe. I causes me physical pain that this show isn't rated higher. I just know some chucklehead executive is going to cancel it...
I don't know. My bad, but I like this show. Like.
Let's not start calling Alec Baldwin a genius. Please? Promise me.
I'm sorry. It was the line about the chiffarobe that killed me. I am a sucker for a literary reference, and I am thrashing in a pool of hysterical tears right now.
@kifbox:
Allow me to help. "Glengarry Glen Ross" will always win. By the way, am I the only person who really liked "The Marrying Man"?
This episode was just so on point. Tight. Everyone was on top of their game. Not only are Alec and Tracy an amazing team, but Tina had great chemistry with Carrie Fisher. And the Kenneth storyline had me cracking up, too. I was literally laughing out loud at "New Jacquee City" though. Dying.
@Beppo:
Oh, I'm sure Kim liked it at the time. But "thoughtless pig" was years away at that point.
This clip will win Baldwin another Emmy. He does a great Pacino, too. His comic skills are just getting tapped now; who knew he was such a fountain of funny? Well, he is the best guest host of SNL of all-time. But he really lays it down, consistently, on 30 Rock. All the thoughtless pigs feel it.
@busterbluth:
I would argue Christopher Walken for the SNL title, but I agree that Alec rocks.
Alec Baldwin and Robert Downey Jr are the two actors working today who can always be counted on to raise the level of the material, and are always watchable no matter what they do. If I were a director, I'd suck up any lingering insurance issues for Downey and any continuing attitude issues for Baldwin* because I'd know that, even if the movie sucks, their scenes would be golden.
* Like, ever listen to the commentary track for The Cooler? The director talked about how Baldwin would deliberately fuck up shots he didn't like and screw with the blocking for more camera time, but added, "thing is, I put up with it because Alec was always right."
Thanks for posting this. I had trouble finding it on the Youtubes.
Still not better than the bit with Adam Sandler. "Rub this oil on my chest, Canteen Boy."
IMO, Robert Downey Jr. can't act his way out of a hose bag.
@WendyKroy: I would watch Robert Downey Jr. in anything. ANYTHING. I can't wait for "Iron Man."
@heidiho:
I'm still laughing over last week's line about a tiger turning back into a Chinese dude at midnight.
And of course, I use every opportunity to work "what am I, a farmer?" into conversation.
@Colonel Mustard: That was the bit that got me, too.
Alec Baldwin IS Charles Nelson Reilly!

I'm going to have to go with Baldwin for best SNL. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a show back there somewhere where he was making out with a dog?
I'm with you on Baldwin as best SNL host too. Wasn't there one back in the mists of time where he made out with a dog?
I still don't like Alec but I adore(d) Sir Charles!
I want to see New Jackee City. "Maaaarrryyy"!!
@FreedomFries:
Couldn't agree more, though I think you buried the best part of the line -- I think it was "never go with a hippie to a second location." I ran that back a dozen times.
I LOVE ALEX BALDWIN, HIS TONY BENNETT IMPRESSION IS PERFECT.BUT LAST NIGHT I SCREAMED. IT WAS SOOO FUNNY.
HE IS THE SHOW AND TINA FEY IS SMART FOR SEEING HIS GREATNESS..I DON'T KNOW HOW TRACY MORGAN DIDN'T FALL OUT.
I really have to echo everyone's sentiments. Alec Baldwin was absolutely amazing - to the point where I actually questioned if the voices coming out of his mouth were real or not. I only wish this clip included Jack's comment about Howard Cosell at the end. And yes, kudos to the rest of the show which was not only extremely hilarious, but rife with satirical undercurrents that you don't often see on sitcoms anymore. I honestly don't know how any other comedy this year can top it.
I think I'm going to watch it again right now. And then buy tickets for New Jackée City.
Someone get that man a one-man tv show with a "cast" of thousands.
"Good Times"? More like "Sanford & Son". Also, since when is a Wallace Shawn impression an offensive white stereotype? Dare I say, that's inconceivable. Ways, loved how this bit ties back to Carrie Fischer's "blackface" idea earlier in the epi.
And I, too, await New Jackee City. And "Werewolf Bar Mitvah"'s release on itunes. Damnit.
This week's episode, and seeing an Emmy-worthy performance (two minutes of pure brilliance is all it takes), was the kind of payoff fans of any show pray for!
Oh, and if you've ever seen Mr. Baldwin's Tony Bennett impersonation you know he's more than capable of doing Tracey Morgan and his "family."
I replayed the scene over and over last night in slack-jawed awe.
I agree that these two minutes have the fine aroma of "Emmy Win".
My only beef? It was on a TV Show! I love 30 Rock but I would have really loved to PAY good money to see this in a movie theater. (As opposed to 99% of the cinematic tripe that is currently being rumored to pass as comedy.)
If Cher can win an Oscar for simply slapping Nicolas Cage and yelling "Snap out of it!"-- then this scene would have easy nailed a golden bald boy for Alec!
@jaubele1: That's just super!
@MIDNIGHTWHTE: Ouch - my eyes!
Jack Donaghy and Tracy are secret lovers - its true - just wait and see - she is gonna let the cat out of the bag at the end of the shows run -
@TryThisAtHome:
Yep. Robert Downey Jr. is 100% talent free.
RDJ is a God, yes big G...you have got to be brain dead to not get him. Utterly brilliant.
I do love some Alec tho' and Tina Fey brings it. There are so many amazing scenes in that show...
Though the whole Seinfeld moment was a low.
I hate the Bee Movie...bad, pushy marketing.
@Karmasucks:
"RDJ is a God...you have got to be brain dead to not get him."
Oh, I "get" him. He simply says his lines quickly and in a casual tone. I guess he's supposed to sound like my best buddy, and we're just having an ordinary chat. Well, I don't mistake his tiresome schtick for "talent". He's boring. "real", some people say I'm "God".
"real", some people say I'm "God".????
That shouldn't be there.
P.S. You need a new hero.
"Thoughtless little pig" message or no, this clip makes me love Alec Baldwin so much that I want to take him behind a middle school and ... well, you know.
@Sissymary:
I believe that bit was called "Greenhilly"...and it was classic.
"I don't wanna dog fight no more." Fabulous.
Who can forget 'Hot Schwety Balls'? Now that was friggin' genius.
