<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on The Bicycle Tutor Explains Just About Every Kind of Bike Fix]]> I second Obsidian's recommendation of Sheldon Brown's web site. I have a 1970's Raleigh 20 folding bike and have enjoyed the wealth of information he provides about this particular model. In fact, he's posted bike info of all kinds and it's fun to rummage through the pictures, links and advice at [sheldonbrown.org] (RIP Mr. Brown and enjoy your great ride in the sky!)

p.s. a supposed "must have" book that's garnered lots of recommendations over the years is Sutherland's Handbook for Bicycle Mechanics, although I have yet to get my hands on a copy

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on YouTube's Newest Title: Killer Of The Live Album]]> Live albums can be great and exciting listens. But I feel like some distance needs to be put between the performance and the listener - with regards to time. Live recordings from the 1960s and '70s are my favourites. Stuff harkening back as far as the 1930s can also produce goosebumps. But only a few relics from the 1980s stand up and, after that, the magic seems lost. I can't figure out if it's because the buffer of time's passage is thin or because the nature of live albums has changed in recent years.

The advent of internet, incredible changes in technology, the way music is distributed and heard - it's all altered the music-listening experience. This shift in interaction has caused me to look for the captivating essence of today's bands in their live acts. If a band can meet or beat in a live setting what they do in the studio, then I want to be there to experience it washing over me. I absolutely love live performances and I prefer to witness today's performers in person instead of gobbling them up in some detached media format. In this day and age, I think the mystery and magic of a live show separates the wheat from the chaff.

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on Amy Winehouse is on the scene]]> How apt that I happened across this Amy Winehouse blurb. Whilst shopping today, the cashier who assisted me totally looked like Amy's "mini me" - hair, makeup and all. All this girl needed was "a bottle of booze at her side," I thought to myself. When will Amy just give up the spotlight and get a job at Costco?

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on What Books Have Changed Your Life?]]> I'm very much a fan of the "classics" but I also appreciate contemporary writers, especially those with a wonderfully off-kilter take on the world like Hunter S. Thompson. My English degree exposed me to some great literary nooks and crannies I'd never dreamed of, including some of the following:
J.D. Salinger - The Catcher In The Rye
John Howard Griffin - Black Like Me
Emily Bronte - Wuthering Heights
L. Frank Baum - The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Lewis Carroll - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Margaret Atwood - The Edible Woman

I also must champion some great poetical works like Atwood's "Journals of Susanna Moodie" or Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach" and various works by William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and everything that William Wordsworth wrote.

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on Kanye West (And His Caps Lock Key) Are Ready To Let You Know What Happened At Bonnaroo]]> I guess it's nice that Kanye wanted to share his light show with concert goers but instead of forcing the festival to conform to his specifications, maybe he should have toned things down to fit their needs. People would have been quite entertained and pleased just to witness his performance, I'm sure, even without all the dressings. If fans really need to see the full meal deal, then they'll have to attend a sole Kanye West concert. Or he can put on his own special multi-day, multi-performer shindig called Kanye-is-the-centre-of-the-world-fest.

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on Is Gene Simmons Really Pissed Off At Radiohead?]]> That he won't just shut up and go away makes KISS grow less relevant and more like a bad Village People/Rocky Horror nightmare. Gene is just trying to hide the fact that he and his elderly bandmates pander to an aging "army" who are interested in little more than retiring to gated communities and occasionally cranking up their SUV satellite radios to hear a KISS song from thirty years ago. If the band bothered to put anything new out these days, few people would care. Music's horizons don't include KISS but he deflects his own irrelevance in favour of attacking progress and technology that he can't understand. Aside from his family's poor yawn of a "reality" show, this is about all that garners him attention these days: [valleywag.com]

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on The Chocolate 7-Inch Forces People To Choose Between 180-Gram Vinyl And 70% Cacao]]> I like records and I like chocolate but this leaves me underwhelmed. Without even hearing this band, I'm willing to bet there isn't much to them beyond some stylish posing.

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on Argument Of The Day: Do People Actually Listen To Nirvana?]]> The way music is formatted, delivered and listened to has changed drastically. It's not the same as when Nevermind was released. Attention spans are abrupt and, on top of that, there's access to a thousand times more artists as opposed to back in the day. There's so much to choose from and because of that I think lots of people are hard-pressed to come up with a decent list of music from a few years back (or otherwise) that they actively listen to on a regular basis. Having said all this, does it diminish the great appeal of Nirvana and their output? Not one bit. Did I practically hear their album daily when it came out? Yes. Do I still spin it as frequently today? No. But that doesn't mean I can't receive it as eagerly now as I did then. It left a watermark that will be referenced for years to come.

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on Best U.S. Cities to Live, Work, and Play]]> I was pleased to see Jon Karak and Hairyback giving kudos to Portland. I've never visited the city but it sticks in my mind because I've read great overall reviews about it several times. In fact, I just read an interesting article about Portland's supposedly excellent multi-faceted transportation system. I assumed it would be listed in the top 10. Another city that I've heard good things about is Chicago. Nonetheless, I'll stick to the good livin' up here in Canada!

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on Keep Weeds from Sprouting with Corn Meal]]> DougGreen is right and people should be very careful about "corn gluten" vs. "cornmeal" because each serves a different purpose in the garden.

Corn Gluten Meal is a byproduct of corn processing. Corn gluten meal's proteins are able to inhibit seed germination, therefore it can be used as a pre-emergent weed killer. It works by stopping root formation. It also breaks down over time to become an organic nitrogen source.

Cornmeal is flour ground from dried corn. It's not a weed killer but can be used as a fungicide. Grocery stores' food grade cornmeal works fine but it's expensive and usually comes in small quantities. Horticultural cornmeal is generally used for animal feed. It's a good choice to use as fungicide because it's cheap and available in bulk. Cornmeal is also a source of nutrients for the soil.

Contrary to DougGreen, I will vouch for both salt and vinegar working to kill off plant life. If they haven't worked for some people, perhaps factors like plant type, soil condition and quantity used affect results.

<![CDATA[cheesebubble commented on Soothe Your Sunburn with Vinegar and Other Home Remedies]]> Like WhatThe..., I'm a fan of Noxema. After catching too much sun this past weekend, I slathered some on earlier today. Feels quite soothing and sure works wonders! I also agree with Woodsyx about using aloe lotion. It's great but I do caution people to spend the time looking for some that doesn't include a high alcohol content or you'll just dry your skin. If you've got an aloe plant on hand, then simply snap a frond off and apply!

I often put vinegar on mosquito bites because it lessens itching. Makes sense that it can tackle the sting of a sunburn too. If you suffer from both ailments, then vinegar is doubly great.
