After comments about Ryan Phillippe's role as a gay teen on One Life to Live earned Jay Leno more attention than any picket line-crossing or old car-driving ever could, the late night host has issued an apology. In a statement released to People, Leno takes the classic "I'm sorry you misunderstood me" route, saying:
"In talking about Ryan's first role, I realize that what I said came out wrong. I certainly didn't mean any malice. I agree it was a dumb thing to say, and I apologize."
Meanwhile, we're still waiting for a mea culpa on the scabbing and roadster-ing fronts (seriously — have you seen him out there with the aviator headgear and everything?).
The ruckus started on March 19, when Leno urged Stop-Loss star Phillippe to pretend "that camera is your gay lover" in order for the actor to give it "his gayest look." For his part, Phillippe declined (and almost walked off stage). The following week saw the anti-Leno website My Gayest Look hit the scene, as well as a statement from GLAAD.
Now that the appropriate amends have been made, we urge everyone to get back to the important business of not caring what Jay Leno says or does.

worst than being dumb is being unfunny. Leno's "yeah, yeah, yeah, that's good" at the writer's meeting can never excuse that.
Normally I would say GLAAD just wants to see their name in print, but good for them. I saw that when it aired and I was stunned by how ignorant Leno was. "Your gayest stare?" Really Jay Leno? Really?
Are there no gay writers on THE TONIGHT SHOW that didn't see that train coming?
I'm just surprised he didn't do the same thing with Jodie Foster last night.
The whole incident side stepped "Stop Loss".
I'm not happy that the issue of Stop Loss was side stepped.
@Superstarsteve: I plan to side-step Stop Loss myself!
I like how that little jokey "see ya everybody!" is now being twisted to sound like Phillipe was brimming with outrage and actually got up to leave. He was kidding around, obviously uncomfortable, but he didn't almost walk away from the interview.
The only funny thing about Jay Leno is his enormous chin.
What's funny is that gay people don't like being made fun of.
@idiotbegone: No. That's irony.
Leno's sexual maturity has been stuck at 16 years for a long time now. The guy owns something like 300 cars -- wanna play? -- and who can forget him leading the national heteromale hissy fit over Brokeback Mountain? Finally some blowback, though he deserves a good sliming.
Nope. Still douchey.
