No sooner did the Universal logo appear onscreen than straight men around the world shrugged at the sight of the new Mamma Mia! trailer, a glittering, sensory-overloading hint at this summer's forthcoming tribute to the revolving institutions of ABBA, Meryl Streep, and general gayness.
While we respect the near-seismic impact of the film's Broadway source material and its iconic star, we're especially interested in the backloaded allusions to Streep's character's licentious past. By "allusions," we mean her half-hearted denial of "sleeping with hundreds of men," or her friends' cheeky amusement at her charming history of looseness, or her spread legs in the foreground of a shot featuring the panty-melting trifecta of Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard. Additionally, the accompanying melodic drone isn't even ABBA, but rather something akin to American Idol ABBA, one degree and two volume notches removed from tuneless cruise-ship ignominy. Are we the only ones missing the discriminating taste (or at least the genetic coding) required to think this was a good idea?

yeah, I saw the musical - pretty freakin gay..
How pissed is Greg Evigan that he didn't get the call for this one?
Not having seen the stage show, I'm not sure - but does anything happen beyond the girl inviting her three dads to her wedding? Because it feels like the same clip plays five times in a row.
@Sweet Panda Love: SPOILER! Now I'll never see it.
Love ABBA, saw the show, thought it was meh, movie looks fun though.
lol@metroville.
@Sweet Panda Love: other than lots of sequins and singing - no, not really much happens
I feel like i'm stating the obvious...but I'm sure Seyfried will bring the script to it's most understandable ending...A spin off for Big Love. She'll be a polygamist child with three moms and three dads.
Meryl looks pissed off in about 80% of the footage, yikes. As Ms. Siriano would say, this trailer is like a hot tranny mess up in here.
Loves me Meryl doing comedy and singing - "Postcards From The Edge" anyone? Have never seen Bway show on principle, but this looks like fun.
However (trailer geek here) what was up with the audio mix? Spot was broadcast way lower and muddier than any other spot on ABC last night. Whatever shop did the finishing for that spot should give Universal their money back.
@Sweet Panda Love: AND THEY PLAY ABBA. Please don't destroy my admiration of you by saying that is not enough.
While watching this trailer, I suddenly realized that I relate to every Abba song there is*. I'm not sure how this makes me feel, exactly.
*except Does Your Mother Know?
While I find Brosnan to be one fine piece of man, I get a bit uneasy when he expresses any feelings other than mild derision...it's like watching that kid robot in A.I. laugh...
"panty-melting trifecta" maybe 5 years ago or so...they're all looking a little jowly these days.
As a massive lifelong fan of ABBA, I'm disgusted at the way all this has panned out. First the stage show, and now this. Every time a new version emerges it cheapens the original magic of the music, and that's what brings on the tears and nausea. Once again, the masses have destroyed something I love *weeps*
@Little Mintz Sunshine: Or that AH! tango face from Thomas Crown.
What happened to Colin Firth? One minute he was it and the next he's playing someone the same age as Pierce Brosnan and the same hotness bracket as Stellan Skarsgard???
People, you're missing the point. Dominic Cooper is in it!
