'Once' Underdogs Open Nation's Hearts, Wallets

once.jpgAmong the paucity of feel-good stories to emerge from this year's Academy Awards, few out-heartwarmed that of Once's buskers-turned-Oscar winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Even fewer, reports Time Magazine, can yield the kind of cross-media windfall spawned by their strategically marketed songcraft:

The duo, who have performed in relative obscurity under the name The Swell Season since 2006, now have an Oscar and a Grammy. Once is the best-selling album on iTunes and the #9 DVD on Amazon. Their label expects sales of the album to triple in the next week.

The pair is gearing up for a U.S. tour: Instead of the 75-seat clubs and bars The Swell Season played last year, they'll be headlining venues like Radio City Music Hall and the Coachella Music Festival. There was one other blessing the film wrought — Hansard and Irglova fell in love while promoting Once last spring.

Bravely acknowledging "[t]here's nothing quite like the Oscars as a promotional vehicle," a Fox spokesman toed a company line with a trajectory secretly stretching all the way into 2015, when Once Over — the third Once sequel after the incrementally diminishing returns of Once More, Once Again and their accompanying Hansard/Irglova Happy Meal action figures — will be released direct to YouTube with Miley Cyrus and Zac Efron filling in as lo-fi lovebirds at the helm of a violently franchise-ending 'tween folk apocalypse. Asked to confirm that Diablo Cody is attached to direct, the spokesman declined comment.

  • It's a heart warming story that's only mildy creepy when you learn that she's the daughter of Hansard's friend and they met when she was quite young....maybe only 14?

  • They couldn't fall in love before last spring, or it would have been illegal. Yes, more than mildly creepy.

  • Am I the only one who thought this movie was a flat, boring turd?

  • @crackbabyjesus: When will America's parents wake up to the dangers of press junkets....

  • @crackbabyjesus: They're like the indie equivalent of Celine Dion and Rene Angelil.

  • @Mel Gibstein: Yes.

    But the 'romance' is still a little creepy.

  • @disinterested 3rd party: I find it 100% creepy, considering they started having relations while they were filming, which made her 17 and him 36. Stay classy, Glen Hansard.

    @Mel Gibstein: No.

    Well, ok, I didn't think it was a flat, boring turd, but it didn't change my life and leave me with a heart full of hope blahblahblah like it did for a lot of people I know who saw it. The same ones who think my soul is dead because I don't agree with them. Had it not been for Glen Hansard's hotness, I would have fallen asleep.

    The song is pretty, though.

    The movie didn't change my life, but it's meaningful in its "someone you always think about" kind of way and the music is good for those who eat up emotive singer-songwriters. And you have to cheer on the "little engine that could" aspects of it.

    Stop harping on the creepy, I'm trying to stay in denial about it.

  • I just hated the way they chose to shoot Dublin like it was still the late 80s early 90s. It would have strenghtened Marketa's story as an Irish immigrant if they juxtaposed her existence with the wealth of Celtic Tiger Ireland. It took 'About Adam' to cinematically transltate the European charm of Dublin onto the screen. It ain't 'The Committments' here anymore so lets let go of the romance of an impoverished Ireland.

    Jesus Christ, she was 19 when they started going out.There's nothing creepy about it.If it was the other way around and it was a 36 year old woman dating a 19 year old guy, he'd be called a goddamn stud.Fair play to her, Hansard is a catch and I'm sure she knows it.Yes they've known each other for years but why do people perceive this as her being pounced on?If you read any interviews with them about their relationship she makes it very clear that she started to fancy him in the last year.I thought it was a lovely film, a really simple story which has been hyped up to the hilt and inevitably the back lash starts because some people can't seem to grasp the concept that sometimes simple is just that, simple.Hype seems to equal high drama or drama full stop.Can anyone just appreciate a story, well-told anymore?They're musicians in a movie that people took to their hearts for whatever reason.Glen Hansard has being making music for 17 years and released 7 albums.What the hell have you done?And to mepo- to me the Dublin in 'Once' looks exactly like the Dublin I traipse through every day on my way to work.I think the less said about the 'Dublin' portrayed in 'About Adam' the better.Or that entire film in fact.The infamous blooody Celtic bloody Tiger didn't perform it's circus act everywhere in this town and I think 'Once ' might very well be the first Irish film(Irish money and all!)to ever actually represent Dublin life for everyday people who aren't on drugs(Adam and Paul)disabled(M.L.Foot)n or imaginary(About Adam).Creepy, my arse.No doubt about it, Irish begrudgery is alive and well..

  • Sheesh. So I guess making a "Lucky Charms" joke is out of the question, huh?

    If it was the other way around and it was a 36 year old woman dating a 19 year old guy, he'd be called a goddamn stud.

    No, in some parts of the States, he'd just be called "her former student" and/or "plaintiff".

    @Little Mintz Sunshine:

    No, in some parts of the States, he'd just be called "her former student" and/or "plaintiff".

    Em, what?
    Last time I checked it wasn't illegal to date/have sex with/form a serious relationship at 19.What exactly is your problem with this?

    And go right ahead, make a hilarious Lucky Charms joke.I'm on the edge of my seat.

  • Someone needs slow down the Guinness consumption... *looking at Calraigh* and get with the Defamer groove...

    Going all Green Dragon is more suited for [www.theworldisyours.com.tr.tc]

  • Well. That O'happened.

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 04:24 AM on 03/03/08 *

    @Miss d:
    I hate Guinness.And the only reference point I have for going 'Green Dragon' is a pub in Tallaght where that means something altogether different.

    @Little Mintz Sunshine:
    Yep.FitzHilarious!

    I'm all for the the excellent defamatory tactics of Defamer.I just wish people would get their facts straight before they jump on their moral highhorse(everyone has one, mine is not green)and incorporate inferior, decidedly malnutritious breakfast cereals into the equation.
    I mean at least go for the porridge.

    Oh shit - that's British. Dammit!

    Potato potato potato.

    PS Glen Hansard is totally hot and I would have totally wanted to nail him when I was nineteen.

  • It was a great movie! And, they are a great couple.

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 03:52 AM on 03/04/08 *

    @Smackdown:

    My sentiments exactly.

  • @Calraigh:
    The article said she is currently 19. It also said they began dating a year ago. As I said, had they dated two years ago, it would have been ILLEGAL. That's not being on a high horse,, that's basic math.

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 03:55 AM on 03/07/08 *

    @crackbabyjesus:

    That is basic math.What's also basic math is the fact that she is currently 20, so the article in question is at fault to begin with.I'm not sure what your point is with the 'had they dated 2 years ago, it would have been illegal.'They didn't sooo..sorry your point is again?It would also been illegal for me to date my french teacher when I was 14.Or my hot guitar teacher when I was 16.But I didn't.Incidentally, in other things that could have happened but actually didn't-the leaning tower of Pisa leaned it's last lean and a meteor blew up South America.You say high horse, I say, how high?!

  • @Calraigh:
    I could say you are witty, but that would not be true, either.

  • Image of Calraigh Calraigh at 02:01 AM on 03/08/08 *

    @crackbabyjesus:

    Oh why don't you just come right out and say it?You're in love with me!I mean come on, you've been holding it back for so long now, why fight it, it's ok!
    I feel it toooooo...
