Thanks to some intrepid, DV-equipped pedestrians in San Francisco's Castro district, the YouTubes now provide some tantalizing glimpses of what Sean Penn looks and sounds like as Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant's biopic. (His face is obstructed in the clip above, but you can get a better look at him here.)
In the scene, Penn cheerfully offers flyers to passersby, saying, "We'll have smiles around the city. A healthy mouth is a happy mouth!" (a milk-related campaign slogan?), in a Professor Frink-ish voice at least one observer thinks is true to Milk's own. Not long after, Emile Hirsch saunters by in a math club getup, throws his arms around dramatically (we hear the camera takes ten pounds off wild gesticulation), then delivers a line in which he calls Penn's character an "old man." We realize this may be a hastily drawn conclusion, but we smell 2009 Oscar.

The obtrusive commentary from the two stereotypes behind the camera is less than illuminating.
Emile plays Cleve Jones, who later started the Names Project. I was a warm body aka an extra in the crowd scenes the other night and the real Cleve gave us instructions before the takes of Emile playing him...odd, but cool.
Sean Penn starring in The Harvey Milk Story?
Seriously, in all honesty, what kind of fish-brained movie exec would greenlight a movie like that? The size of the potential audience for this movie might not even reach double digits.
@Ssscorpion: How's the weather in Missouri?
I'll reserve judgement until it is in the can... weird attitude coming from me, I know... but I'm curious as to how this puppy grows up...
@Ssscorpion: It can't be smaller than the audience for "Into the Wild".
The freeze frame for this video had me thinking it was some brilliant you-tuber playing Harvey Milk as Horshach as filtered through Penn's Willie Starck. I was almost having laughing fits looking at the freeze frame.
This thought was better than ten of these videos.
@Ssscorpion: Perhaps you need to be introduced to the concepts of 'specialty divisions' and 'independent filmmaking'? Both are handy little places that itsy bitsy films go to take refuge from the narrow-minded jack-assery that you exemplified in your post.
(sorry, that was a bit bitchy, but it felt right. excuse me.)
No problem, hack-a-rific, what would the internet be without jackassery and intolernace of the opinions of others? I'll supply the jackassery, you supply the intolernace, and together we'll conquer the internet!
That's more like it!
